Making Dinner

Making Dinner
Straight out of the kitchen, the band Making Dinner is an all-female San Francisco favorite that has been labeled indie, folk, and pop. Making Dinner takes over the stage the way the smell of cookies baking takes over a kitchen.

Jul 21, 6:30pm to 9:30pm, Cafe Leila, 1724 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley

Mark St Mary with Dance Lesson with Ted Sherrod

The hardworking Mark St. Mary Louisiana Blues & Zydeco Band has been a favorite of Cajun/zydeco festival crowds for years. St. Mary and company were voted best zydeco band of 2007 by the Bay Area Blues Society, and he was named the Delta King at the Isleton Crawfish Festival. St. Mary began playing accordion when he was 12, inspired originally by "King of Zydeco" Clifton Chenier. Singing in English and Creole French, St. Mary leads his band through original songs including "St. Mary Special" and "Moi Seado (My Syrup)," interspersed with dance floor favorites from Chenier's "I'm Coming Home" and the classic Harry Choates version of "Jolie Blon" to Rockin' Sidney's "Don't Mess with My Toot Toot."

Accompanying St. Mary are some of the finest Cajun and zydeco musicians in Northern California, playing waltzes, two-steps, line dances, and flat-foot zydeco. His band includes guitarist Jim Scott, bassist Dana Mandell, and drummer Timothy Orr.

Bill Kirchen and the Hounds of the Bakersfield

Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten nationwide, and elicit instant recognition. Named a "Titan of the Telecaster" by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates a musical tradition that embraces rock `n' roll, blues and bluegrass, Texas Western swing and California honky-tonk.

Nick Lowe describes Bill as "... a devastating culmination of the
elegant and funky...a really sensational musician, with enormous
depth."

Dirk Hamilton

With a style that drew comparisons to Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen and John Prine, Dirk Hamilton released a slew of critically-acclaimed major label records in the mid-70's into the 80's (Meet Me at the Crux is considered a minor masterpiece), before leaving the music industry behind to counsel troubled teens. He never really stopped though, becoming something of a star in Italy and quietly releasing 15 more albums since 1989.

His latest CD Touch and Go was released last year. He has rock & roll passion, razor sharp wit, and the poetic musings of someone who has seen it all. He's the real deal.

Tickets are $20 and are available at the link below or at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support!
