Berkeley Arts Festival Calendar

At this time of year, when the veil between the living and dead is thought to be at its most diaphanous, take part in the eighth year of the Dìa de los Muertos Celebration. Gather in the heart of Downtown Berkeley to celebrate and remember those who have passed on.

The event hosts food booths and trucks, a wine and beer garden at Maison Bleue, free skeletal face painting, and art and craft vendors. There are DIY art projects for kids and adults. Mariachi music by Con Permiso and the hauntingly beautiful violin of Kippy Marks make the evening magical. Costumes and traditional Dìa de los Muertos papier maché giant heads are encouraged.

This year several altars will be created by local artists and students from Berkeley City College. The public is invited to bring photos or stories of loved ones, candles, breads, or flowers to add to the large community ofrenda. A blessing of the altar is followed by a sidewalk candle light procession through the area along a path of strewn marigold petals.

The Dia de los Muertos Celebration is sponsored by the Downtown Berkeley Association, Berkeley Community Media, East Bay Loop, East Bay Express and Yelp. Take BART to the Downtown Berkeley station/Allston Way exit. Free admission. Free Bike Valet by Spokes. For more info visit
