Community Music Day at Crowden

Families from all over the Bay Area flock to Crowden's annual free musical carnival, Community Music Day, for a day of musical fun and exploration!

Festivities feature an "Instrument Petting Zoo," where kids and adults alike touch and learn to make sounds on the instruments of a symphony orchestra. We even have special miniature string instruments for tiny hands and fingers.

The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra will perform short and engaging programs based on the musical theme, "The Sound of Music" at 10:40, 11:20, and 12:00pm. Tumbling mats for wriggling toddlers, short selections, and hands-on musical activities make this the perfect way to introduce the youngest children to the joys of live classical music!

Family members of all ages can sing, dance, move, and drum together in our short class demonstrations by Crowden and East Bay Music Together.

Construct your own instruments to make music at home with in our instrument crafts room.

Featuring musical performances for kids, by kids throughout the day, including Crowden School and Suzuki students and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

With face painting, BBQ food truck by Bel Campo Meat Co., sheet music sale, prizes for every kid, and much more!

Community Music Day is free to the public .

Math & Cultural: Celebration of Mind 2016

Come celebrate math with puzzles, games, magic, stories, and more! Kids ages 8 and up, and grown-ups who are kids at heart, will enjoy this afternoon filled with hands-on math activities.

The event honors the life and work of Martin Gardner, former Scientific American columnist who inspired a generation of mathematicians and recreational math enthusiasts. In the spirit of Martin Gardner's love of Alice in Wonderland and with Halloween around the corner, come "down the rabbit hole" and explore with us!

This event is free and open to the public!

Eva Hesse at BAMPFA

Eva Hesse

Marcie Begleiter (US/Germany 2016)

An indispensable aid to understanding and appreciating a fascinating artist.”—A. O. Scott, New York Times

Equal parts inspiring and heartbreaking, Eva Hesse focuses on the eponymous artist who despite her tragically short life became one of the most significant American artists of the last century. Director Marcie Begleiter makes effective use of the artist’s diaries, which, read by Selma Blair, lend a poignant intimacy to the film. Art lovers and aspiring artists alike won’t want to miss this eye-opening and inspiring look into the life of the Eva Hesse. Arrive early to see Hesse’s remarkable test pieces from the BAMPFA collection, which will be on view in the atrium outside the Barbro Osher Theater during the run of the film.
