Berkeley Then: A Photo Diary of the Sixties Scene by Diane De Pisa
When Elio De Pisa arrived in Berkeley in 1960 from Rome and from his perch as the manager of Caffe Mediterraneum, he captured the essence of life of Telegraph Avenue and environs through his camera lens. "Elio De Pisa, however, did not exploit the sordid and sensational. He found the texture of everyday life rich and telling enough, capturing rapturous drummers and dancers, evangelists and their detractors, nudes en promenade-situations infused with humor and drama. The book was first conceived in the 1970s, when Elio De Pisa mounted his favorite black and white gelatin silver prints as composites on art boards. A decade later, he selected what he called his 'photo diary of the Berkeley sixties scene.'" It was after Elio's death in 2002 that Diane, along with her friends, curated the selection, and she has added text to complete the diary. Diane De Pisa will join us to share with us the creative process and her favorite photos. She will be available after the talk to sign Berkeley Then. This book is available from the Center Store for purchase.
