A touching portrait of the friendship between a Black teenager and a Holocaust survivor in the 1960s.
–
Jewish Community Center of the East Bay presents a
staged reading of Stephanie Anne Johnson’s newest play. This autobiographical portrait begins when a teenage Stephanie looks into the window of an art store in Englewood,
New Jersey. Welcomed by Mrs. Reiff, the owner of the Counterfeit Shop, they develop a decades long friendship which transcends age, culture, race, and religion. There are
flashbacks to highlight this historical moment on the East coast when Black people and Jewish people shared common cause in the quest for social justice. A surprising cultural
intersection is revealed at the end of the play. Susan Felix, Bruce Bierman, and Stephanie Anne Johnson will be the readers. Bruce Bierman will lead participants in Jewish dance
before an open discussion of this play in development. People of all ages are welcome to attend this event, which will be presented for one afternoon only.
Tickets are $8
