Crowden presents a free lecture by Carl Haber, MacArthur Fellow

Audio preservationist Carl Haber is saving our recorded cultural treasures, one sound at a time. Carl connected his work at the Lawrence National Berkeley Laboratory with a problem: much of the world's heritage is recorded on delicate, obsolete media, no longer accessible to the public, and in danger of being lost forever.

Hear how he is restoring our collective memory--from recordings of early 20th century Native Americans to Alexander Graham Bell's voice--in a fascinating FREE lecture presented by Crowden Music Center.

6:30pm "Meet & Greet" Reception, 7pm Lecture

Phillip Greenlief - Joëlle Léandre Duo

8 pm
Mazen Kerbaj

mazen kerbaj is a trumpet player, improviser and festival organiser from beirut, lebanon.
he has many regular groups, some of them focusing only on the trumpet, like his trio with franz hautzinger and axel dörner, or his new project, the mazen kerbaj's ariha trumpet ensemble (w/ hautzinger, dörner, nate wooley, peter evans, greg kelley and liz allbee).
his playing ranges from minimalistic improv to what have been described as textural free jazz.
his solo work is based on a heavy use of circular breathing and the "preparation" of the trumpet. very familiar with all the extended techniques for the trumpet, from bill dixon's to axel dörner's, kerbaj pushed the concept further with some unique prepared trumpet techniques. the end result is close to electronic music, played acoustically.

9 pm
Joëlle Léandre (France) - contrabass
Phillip Greenlief - woodwinds

Joëlle Léandre and Phillip Greenlief will present their long-standing duo at Berkeley Arts! The duo has been working together since 2005, and recorded THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT, a series of improvised duets and solo pieces for the Relative Pitch label in 2009. This is their first performance since 2011.

Contra-bassist and improviser Joëlle Léandre counts John Cage among her close mentors and has remained under-acknowledged for the amount -- and quality -- of her work since she began recording in 1981. Léandre has performed and recorded with many of the best, and most interesting, musicians in improvised music, including German bassist Peter Kowald, American reedsman and composer Anthony Braxton, Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer, Australian violinist Jon Rose, vocalist Lauren Newton, and British guitarist Fred Frith, among others.
