Rupert Garcia in Conversation with John Zarobell

In conjunction with our upcoming exhibition, NEW MEDIA COMBINATIONS

Rupert Garcia investigates the politics of the image, questioning mass media and the power of propaganda. One of the leading artists in the Chicano Art movement in the Bay area of the late-1960s and early 1970s, García co-founded several seminal West Coast civil rights movement-oriented workshops and collectives, including Galería de la Raza and the San Francisco Poster Workshop. In his recent work, Garcia has collaborated with Donald Farnsworth and Magnolia Editions to create unique prints that are both digital and hand-rendered.

John Zarobell is Assistant Professor of International Studies and Program Chair of European Studies at the University of San Francisco. Formerly, he held the positions of assistant curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and associate curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

CONVERSATIONS @ Berkeley Art Center brings together artists and scholars in a dialogue about art, process and the Bay Area's contemporary creative climate. All CONVERSATIONS are free for members,* $10 general admission.

Paul McNees: Koinonia Music Fest

Koinonia Music Fest (Koinonia is the anglicisation of a Greek word (κοινωνία) that means communion by intimate participation; or better, a third mind created between two minds in communion). Performers from the "experimental" music community speak about their work and then do a short performance. The evening concludes in a Q & A with the audience and all the performers.

The aim is three-fold: one is to provide a context through which those unfamiliar with experimental music may come to appreciate its more subtle beauty. Another is to allow long-time listeners a chance to hear about the intimate inner workings of the music they love. Lastly, to create a rich dialogue between artists whose paths may not have otherwise crossed.

8pm to 10pm, 2133 University
