Tales of Love: The Enchanted World of Jacques Demy

Starts July 25
Don’t miss the largest series we have ever devoted to the work of French director Jacques Demy (1931–1990). In addition to his best-known films (Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Donkey Skin, The Young Girls of Rochefort), many presented in digital restorations, The Enchanted World of Jacques Demy includes his early shorts from the fifties and several of his lesser-known works from the seventies and eighties. Essential to this series are three films directed by Agnès Varda, made shortly after Demy’s death, in which she offers a privileged perspective on her husband’s aesthetic sensibilities and achievements. Join us this summer for five weeks of Demy— the big screen is the best place to experience the masterfully choreographed camera movements, colorful decorative elegance, and celebration of music that are the trademarks of Demy’s cinematic style.
