R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Ain’t I A Woman at La Peña

Panel & Performance about Women in Hip Hop
Hip Hop was born in the South Bronx of New York in 1977. The 80s and 90s gave rise to several female hip hop stars, including Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Salt 'n' Peppa, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Eve, Lil' Kim, Trina, Da Brat, and Bahamadia (The Roots). However, since 2000, women have been systematically pushed out of the mainstream. In 2011, the infamous Lil Wayne-backed Nikki Minaj is the last woman standing. Through a thought provoking panel and a subsequent musical performance this two-part program will explore the presence of female MCs in the field and the challenges they face and, ultimately, overcome.

Panel will be moderated by Davey D. from Hard Knock Radio.
